Associate of Science in Surgical Technology

Surgical technologists are vital to surgeons, serving as an essential part of the surgical team and helping to save lives. In South College’s Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program, you’ll receive hands-on training and education for this key role.

You’ll study pharmaceutical drugs, surgical procedures, and clinical care, including how to position, prep, and drape a patient. You’ll also discuss sterilization procedures, the importance of keeping surgical areas sterile, and the role of microorganisms in the environment. In addition to time in the classroom and our Surgical Technology lab, you’ll gain practical clinical experience in operating rooms at various hospitals and out-patient surgery centers.

When you graduate, you’ll have worked to develop an understanding of what to expect in the operating room and be ready to perform vital tasks before, during, and after surgery.

 

Associate of Science in Surgical Technology with a Concentration in Flexible Endoscope Reprocessing

In South College’s Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program, you’ll receive hands-on training and education that equips you to help surgeons and patients before, during, and after surgery. You’ll study pharmaceutical drugs, sterilization, surgical procedures, and relevant lab testing. You’ll also cover clinical care, including how to position, prep, and drape patients. In addition to spending time in our Surgical Technology classrooms and labs, you’ll gain clinical experience in operating rooms at hospitals and outpatient surgery centers.

For your concentration, you’ll take an additional course designed to prepare you to become a safe and competent flexible endoscope reprocessor technician. After completing this course and gaining 6 months of experience, you’ll be eligible to sit for the Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor Certification Exam offered by the Certification Board for Sterilization Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).

Associate of Science in Surgical Technology with a Concentration in Sterile Processing

In South College’s Associate of Science in Surgical Technology program, you’ll receive hands-on training and education that equips you to help surgeons and patients before, during, and after surgery. You’ll study pharmaceutical drugs, sterilization, surgical procedures, and relevant lab testing. You’ll also discuss clinical care, including how to position, prep, and drape patients. In addition to spending time in our Surgical Technology classrooms and labs, you’ll gain clinical experience in operating rooms at hospitals and outpatient surgery centers.

For the Sterile Processing concentration, you’ll take an additional course on how to disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment. The course also covers operating and monitoring sterilization units and processes. After completing this course, you’ll be eligible to sit for the Sterilization Processing and Distribution Technician Certification Exam offered by the Certification Board for Sterilization Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
